The National Wellness Institute is an organization founded in 1977 with the mission of providing health promotion and wellness professionals unparalleled resources and services that fuel professional and personal growth.

NWI offers certification and training for wellness professionals, providing them with frameworks and tools that they can use to help clients achieve their wellness goals. The company has been very successful over the years and their annual National Wellness Conference has become the most highly acclaimed professional conference in health and wellness.

The institute defines wellness as an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.

Our mission was to create a wellness application where the user can program, track and share their goals. As we are passionate about video games, Julie and I decided to incorporate a lot of gamification and reward possibilities so that people could invest in the long term. Indeed, we noticed in our survey (58 responses) that many of the respondents suffered from anxiety and stress (43%), but that few of them fought against it with meditation (12%). However, the vast majority played video games (85%).

More and more video games deal with the subject of mental health, or provide relaxation through immersion.

Frustrations

  • Being faced with an algorithm that fails to understand the exercises she needs
  • Having to do repetitive exercises that don't reinvent themselves
  • Not feeling invested in the application
  • Having to deal with an application that is too complicated to understand when suffering from panic attacks

"People who are sensitive to mental health issues need a way to manage their stress and anxiety so that they can take care of their well-being in a fun and playful way . We believe that creating a product that allows people who are sensitive to mental health issues to relax, control their anxiety and create new habits while having fun and feeling rewarded will improve their well-being and daily lives."

Once we had a clear understanding of who our users were, it was easier for us to be able to create a journey that was relevant to them. We decided to create a user journey for Jade who is launching the application for the first time, so she will be able to set up a profile and have her first experience. Then we were able to create the first sketches so that we had a clear idea of the pages we would have to create.
